Muir Beach
Paintings made on location capture the light and spirit of a place. Rachel Philips works in oil and sometimes casine on panel.. After years of landscape study the figure has come into the current work including mythical images and series of flesh-less portraits. In the quick photo culture of our time, the act of slowing down to look and capture the unique view before us of a paticuliar moment brings up universal themes. A memory may be of this place here, yet is different. How we rush through, yet just sitting, being in a place and recording that paticuliar moment can be richly rewarding and a delight to have a piece of time held at last.
